How do you find who is blogging against you? ?

A fellow church member had someone write a blog on a local news site. Matter involved him with other women, not his wife. I believe in total free speach but the things written are damaging his marriage and his relationship with his kids. He just wants the blogging to stop. Not sure why he doesnt want to sue? To find the person, I believe he would need to get the IP of the person that wrote it, then supena the ISP to get the MAC. Is this the only way to find the person that wrote the blog on the papers site?
